Website design, portals and dashboards you own

Small business website design that earns enquiries, a portal that keeps jobs and customers in one place, and a dashboard that shows how the business is doing without anyone building a report. Each one built around how your business already works.

Digital solutionsNew Zealand-wideFree first session
In short
  • A good small-business website is fast, works on a phone, speaks your customers' languages and gets every enquiry to the right person.
  • Staff and customer portals put job tracking, photos, invoices and approvals in one place, on every phone.
  • Live dashboards pull sales, jobs and cash from the systems you already use, so the numbers update themselves.
  • You own what we build, and the scope and price are agreed in writing before work starts. Fixes and tweaks are free for the first 30 days after launch.

Digital tools that fit the business, not the other way round

Plenty of small businesses have a website someone built years ago, a pile of spreadsheets, a group chat for jobs, and an accounting system that only the owner understands. Each one works on its own. Together, they make the week harder than it needs to be.

We build three kinds of digital tools for New Zealand businesses: websites that win trust and bring in enquiries, portals that give staff and customers one place to see and do things, and live dashboards that show the numbers without anyone building a report. They are built around how you already work, and they connect to the tools you already pay for.

Websites that win trust

For most customers, your website is the first real impression. They have usually found you on Google or been given your name, and they are deciding quickly whether to call you or the next business on the list. A good small-business website does a handful of things well.

Whether you need a website for your business for the first time, or a website designer to rebuild or update one that is no longer working for you, we design and build it around what your customers need to see before they call.

Fast, especially on a phone

Most people will look you up on their phone, often on mobile data. Pages should load quickly, text should be readable without zooming, and the phone number should be one tap away. Large uncompressed images, heavy plugins and pop-ups are common culprits on slow sites, so we keep them to a minimum.

In your customers' languages

If your customers speak Chinese, Hindi, Punjabi or te reo Māori, a site that speaks to them in their language builds trust quickly. Our own site runs in English, Chinese, Hindi, te reo Māori and Punjabi, so we know the work involved in keeping each version accurate and up to date. We help you decide which languages are worth it, rather than translating everything by default.

Contact forms that actually reach you

An enquiry that lands in an unchecked inbox is a lost job. We set forms up to go to the right person and send the customer a confirmation. Each enquiry can also be logged somewhere you will see it, such as a Google Sheet or a text to your phone.

Search basics done properly

You do not need tricks to be found on Google, but the basics matter: clear page titles and descriptions, a page for each service and area you cover, clear content that answers real questions, and consistent business details everywhere you are listed. Our guide to websites that turn visitors into calls covers these in more depth, and is worth reading even if you never hire us.

Staff and customer portals

A portal is a private, logged-in area of a website. Your staff or customers sign in and see only what is relevant to them. It works on any phone, and it can be added to the home screen so it feels like an app, without anyone downloading anything from an app store.

You may have heard it called a client portal, a customer portal or a staff app. It is web app development sized for a small business: we design the portal around the jobs your team and customers already do, and build only the screens they need.

Job trackingStaff portal

Each job's status, address, notes and next step in one place, instead of a group chat.

Photos on the jobStaff portal

Before-and-after photos and proof of delivery taken on site and filed against the right job.

Invoices and statementsCustomer portal

Customers see what they owe and what they have paid, pulled from your accounting software.

ApprovalsCustomer portal

Quotes, variations and sign-offs approved with one tap, with a record of who approved what and when.

Here is a concrete example. A building company has three crews on different sites. Today, photos sit on personal phones, variations are agreed by text, and the office chases everyone on Friday for timesheets. With a staff portal, each crew sees its jobs for the day, uploads photos against the job, and logs hours as it goes. The client gets a link to approve a variation, and the approval appears against the job. Our trades and building page shows how this fits alongside quoting and invoicing automation.

The same idea works for a courier filing proof of delivery, which we cover on our transport and delivery page, or for an adviser who needs clients to upload documents to one safe place instead of emailing them.

Start small. The best portals begin with one job, such as photos or approvals, and grow once people are using them. A portal nobody opens is just another login.

Live dashboards

A dashboard is one screen that shows the numbers you care about, pulled automatically from the systems they already live in. Sales from your point-of-sale system or online store, where it can export to Excel or Google Sheets or emails you a daily report, unpaid invoices from Xero, jobs from your portal, hours from your timesheets. It updates itself, and you can check it on your phone wherever you are.

Some people call it a business dashboard, a KPI dashboard or a sales dashboard. For many owners it starts as a Xero dashboard, with money owed and cash shown next to sales and jobs.

The hard part is not the screen. It is choosing the handful of numbers that actually change your decisions, and making sure each one comes from a reliable source. A shop owner might want yesterday's sales, best sellers and stock that is running low. A trades business might want quotes sent, quotes won, jobs in progress and money owed. Our guide to your business numbers every week helps you pick yours.

For anyone who prefers not to open another screen, the same numbers can arrive as a short summary on your phone every Monday.

How these connect with automation

Websites, portals and dashboards are most useful when they are joined up with the rest of the business. That is where our AI automation service comes in. A few examples of how they work together:

  • A website enquiry creates a customer record and a follow-up task, and the customer gets a prompt reply that answers common questions.
  • A chatbot on your website answers common questions from information you have approved, day or night, and passes anything else to you.
  • A job approved in the customer portal creates a draft invoice in your accounting software.
  • Photos uploaded in the staff portal are filed against the job, ready if a customer or insurer asks.
  • The dashboard reads from the same systems, so its figures come from the same records your accountant works from.

Because everything is built around the same tools, information is entered once and used everywhere, rather than retyped into three places.

You own it, and your data stays yours

Everything we build is yours. It is built in your own accounts, you own the systems and the logins, and you can walk away with everything we build. Where the tools allow, we set things up so you can make simple changes yourself, like editing text or adding a staff member.

  • Data is handled under the Privacy Act 2020.
  • Data we store for you is hosted in New Zealand or Australia. The apps you already use, such as your accounting or email software, keep data in their own locations.
  • It is never used to train anyone's AI model. AI tools we use on your data run on business plans that do not train on it.
  • Only Ambs works on your project and sees your data. We do not use contractors.
  • Portals are set up so each person sees only what they should, and you control who has access.

If your portal will hold personal information, such as client documents or health details, our Privacy Act 2020 guide explains what to think about before you start.

How we work

  1. We watch the work. In a free session we look at how enquiries, jobs and numbers flow through the business today. You get a written plan and an hours estimate that is yours to keep, even if you do not hire us.
  2. We build one thing first. Usually the piece likely to make the biggest difference, such as the website, one portal feature or one dashboard. Scope and price are agreed in writing before we start, and you try it on real jobs and real customers before it goes live.
  3. You own it. It is built in your own accounts, so you keep everything even if we stop working together. We train your team in English, Hindi or Punjabi, whichever they prefer. Fixes and tweaks are free for the first 30 days after launch; after that, support is a monthly plan or pay as you go, whichever suits you. A named contact stays reachable in New Zealand hours.

What this is not

  • Not a template with your logo dropped in. We build around how your business works, which takes a little more time up front.
  • Not a promise of page one on Google. Nobody can honestly promise rankings. We get the basics right so you have a fair chance, and the rest depends on your market and your content.
  • Not a replacement for your accounting software. Portals and dashboards read from your accounts; your accountant keeps working the way they do now.
  • Not a giant system on day one. We build one useful piece, see it being used, then decide what comes next.

Common questions

How much does a website cost?

It depends on what it needs to do, and the same goes for a portal or dashboard, so we do not publish a price list. After the free session you get a written plan, and the scope and price are agreed in writing before any work starts. After launch, fixes and tweaks are free for the first 30 days. After that, support is a monthly plan or pay as you go, whichever suits you.

Can you rebuild my existing website?

Yes. We look at what is working on your current site and what is not, keep the content that earns enquiries, and plan redirects from your existing pages to the new ones, which helps protect the search visibility you already have.

Do my staff need to install an app for the portal?

Usually not. A portal can run in the phone's web browser and be added to the home screen like an app, so there is nothing to download from an app store.

Can my website be in more than one language?

Yes. Our own site is in English, Chinese, Hindi, te reo Māori and Punjabi. We help you decide which languages your customers actually use and how to keep each version up to date.

Who owns the website and the data?

You do. You own the systems and the logins, and you can walk away with everything we build. Data is handled under the Privacy Act 2020, and data we store for you is hosted in New Zealand or Australia.
